Services Offered
Under the personal leadership of founder Dr. Carl Byerly, Charter School Fine Arts Consulting Services partner with charter schools to:

Coordinate and facilitate a needs assessment,
strategic planning and other capacity building
strategies in the arts (including initiating an arts
program from the beginning stages)

Provide After School Programs - include
staffing and curriculum for strings orchestra, band,
choir, dance, drama, and visual arts at little or no
cost
-
Organize the development and implementation of
a coordinated network of professional development
experiences in arts education for school
administrators, practicing teachers, teaching
artists and other community stakeholders

Identify, cultivate and sustain strategic
partnerships among arts and community based
organizations in order to advance the arts program
at your academy (includes increasing public
awareness of your charter school in the community by
featuring your arts program through local
performances and media exposure)

Implement an arts integration program into the
existing core curriculum
-
Develop regional and statewide opportunities
for your students in the arts (existing activities
include the Michigan Charter School Fine Arts Camp,
Charter School Solo and Ensemble Competition, All
State Charter School Choir, etc.)

Biography of Dr. Carl Byerly
Dr. Carl Byerly has over 25 years of educational experience in both the public and private setting as a music teacher and administrator. Since 1998 he has worked exclusively with the charter school movement. Dr. Byerly has also served as a Director of Education over five charter schools in southeast Michigan for an educational service provider. He has worked extensively with schools administration and faculty members in the organization and maintaining of successful arts integration programs and arts community partnerships. As a recognized statewide leader in arts education since 1999, Dr. Byerly has been a guest speaker on arts education and director of statewide arts activities including the annual Michigan Association of Public School Academies state convention with over 3000 educators in attendance. From 1998 to 2006 Dr. Byerly served as Administrator at Woodland Park Academy of Grand Blanc, MI and was selected out of four charter schools in the state of Michigan as a recipient of a two year arts integration dissemination grant. Dr. Byerly is the founder and director of the annual Michigan Charter School Fine Arts Camp since 1999. The Camp offers 125 classes in the areas of vocal and instrumental music, drama, dance, visual arts and speech. It is hosted on numerous university campuses during the summer season with over 300 students in attendance. He is also the founder and director of the Michigan Charter School Solo and Ensemble Competition and the 100 voice All State Charter School Choir.
From 1994 to 2004 Dr. Byerly served as a music professor at the University of Michigan-Flint. He was the director of the national recording artist performance group the University
of Michigan-Flint Gospel Choir. This choir had released a CD entitled “Colorblind” on Advance Records of Chicago and was nominated as “most outstanding choir” for the
nationally televised 2002 Gospel Truth Magazine Awards under the direction of Dr. Bobby Jones. The Choir also performed for the national 2002 Stellar Awards and the BET and
Word Network’s “Bobby Jones Gospel Hour. From 1991 to 2004 Dr. Byerly directed the 100 voice Flint Community Gospel Choir that performed annually with the Flint Symphony
Orchestra on the televised Music In The Parks Concert Series. With this particular project he has worked with Stevie Wonder’s orchestra director, Dr. Henry Panion, Dean of
Music as the University of Alabama, as guest conductor and arranger. Dr. Byerly also founded and coordinated the Crescendo Midwest Music Conference from 1991 to 2001 that
featured such Grammy Award recording artists as Ron Winans, Marvin Sapp, Commissioned, and Lanny Wolfe. Since 2004 Dr. Byerly has served as Dean of the College of Arts
and developed the music education curriculum for Great Lakes University.
Since 1976 Dr. Byerly’s performance groups have won numerous awards and scholarships at both local and national levels. His wide variety of performances have included a
Grammy Award nominated recording, the President of the United States and Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu. Dr. Byerly has lectured and performed at
music conventions and seminars across the United States and abroad. His travels include forty five states and six continents.
Dr. Byerly holds music and music education degrees from the University of Texas, Jackson College of Ministries, Clayton University and Mississippi College. He also has
completed a series of courses at Central Michigan University and the University of Phoenix in school administration.
Dr. Byerly served as a board member of the Grand Blanc Arts Council and the Bingham Arts Academy in Alpena, MI. He has also served as chair of the music division of
the annual Grand Blanc SpringFest Arts Festival. From 1992 to 2004 Dr. Byerly served as a member of the Music In The Parks Committee for the city of Flint and surrounding
areas. In addition, he has served as an honorary board member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Some of Dr. Byerly's memberships include the College Music
Society, National
Academy of Recording
Arts and Sciences and Music Educators National Conference. Dr. Byerly is listed in the 2004 edition of Who’s Who In America.
